Have you ever bought a pair of shoes from Payless? How did you feel about the overall comfort, style and value of the shoes you bought? Would you say that they hold the same value as a pair of shoes you spent $500+ for? Of course not. Payless is made for consumers interested in paying less, it's in the name. No one would ever consider spending an excessive amount for a pair of Payless shoes because the general idea is that they are all cheap shoes. Right?

Have you ever heard of Palessi? Palessi hosted a private launch party of a new luxury brand of shoes designed by Italian designer Bruno Palessi.

“I would pay $400, $500. People are going to be like, ‘Where did you get those? Those are amazing,’ ” a woman said as she tried on a pair of bright-gold sneakers with leopard prints.

The thing is, the woman was not actually buying a pair of Palessi shoes because there’s no such brand, on top of it all there’s no Bruno Palessi.

There is, however, Payless ShoeSource, who hoped to shake things up through an elaborate — and expensive — advertising prank attracting new customers and changing the perception that the company sells cheap, unfashionable shoes. What they also proved is that having a catchy luxury brand design will cause people to open and dig deep within their purses spending the highest expense.
